More than 1,000 road accidents each year are caused by defective tyres, according to Tyresafe.

During October, hundreds of retailers throughout the UK will be offering free tyre checks to drivers, as part of Tyre Safety Month.

The initiative aims to raise awareness among motorists of the dangers of driving with tyres that could be flat, have balding tread or be fitted incorrectly. Tyresafe estimates that more than 40 deaths are caused on the road every year due to defective tyres.

RIAS, which offers insurance for the over-50s, is in support of the scheme, saying that it is "vitally important" to encourage drivers to carry out checks that could potentially save lives.

Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, said: "Any initiative that helps improve driver safety and reduce the number of accidents on our roads has our full backing and support."

Drivers should ensure they obtain the correct car insurancepolicy to protect them in an accident caused by a fault with their vehicle's tyres or any other component.

The Times Car Clinic recently reported that having car tyres of a lower speed or load rating can cause problems.

Insureandgo offer car insurance for all types of motorists.
