Any existing relationship difficulties will only be made worse by taking a holiday together, it has been claimed.
Research published by online travel agent sunshine.co.uk suggests that the biggest reason why trips are cancelled is because of a separation.
Mo Kurimbokus, a counsellor from Relate, said that couples should be thinking that if things are so bad between them "are we really going to take this baggage, so to speak, with us?"
Mr Kurimbokus also pointed out that when you are thrown together on holiday you can't use going to work or looking after children as an excuse not to spend time together when at home.
The survey from sunshine.co.uk shows that 12 per cent of couples who book a holiday together do not end up going, with more than a third saying they had changed the name on a trip booking to a friend's after a relationship breakdown.
When booking a holiday it is essential you have the right
travel insurance, whether to ensure you are protected against cancellation or lost luggage.
