The Royal Mail Group has been praised for its fleet management and handling of van insurance claims arising from its commercial activities.

One of three organisations to be rewarded in the Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards, the group has spent more than £10 million fitting speed limiters to its fleet.

The money has also gone towards equipping its 30,000-strong fleet of red vans with in-vehicle telemetry.

Prince Michael says that Royal Mail Group and fellow award-winner Tesco "are tremendous examples of what can be achieved in improving the safety of employees and all other road users".

The Driving for Better Business website has a case study of Royal Mail Group's operations that note the improvements made in its responses to vehicle incidents.

A bespoke system is now in place which records a number of details relating to each incident that might feature on a van insurance claim form, such as weather conditions and external factors.

Should a driver have been injured during an incident, senior management representatives at the organisation are automatically informed.
