Foreign currency exchange services firm Travelex has announced that the demand for rubles has increased dramatically ahead of the Champions League Final to be held in the Russian Capital.

Anthony Hudson, director of retail at Travelex.co.uk, said that demand had more than tripled in recent days, adding that the number of large exchanges had also increased.

"Whilst big sporting events abroad usually see a spike in demand for the local foreign currency we've seen travellers making larger transactions."

He suggest that this was evidence that many UK fans were planning on treating the event as a short holiday.

Taking place this Wednesday, the final will see Manchester United and Chelsea go head-to-head for the prestigious trophy.

Guidelines on the UK Travelex website advise consumers that currently, a pint of beer costs between 60 and 100 rubles, equivalent to around £1.36 to £2.27.

There has been recent concern over how many fans would get to see the game after Russia initially refused to relax visa requirements. In an unprecedented move, visitors will be able to use their tickets as travel documentation.
