Following on from last year's floods, rural home and
commercial insurance provider NFU Mutual has advised those living and working in the countryside on how to handle severe weather.
It noted that last year's floods cost the company more than £100 million and resulted in more than 13,000 claims.
For those looking to limit the extent of potential damages to their property in the future, the insurer advised people to turn off all gas, water and electricity at the mains when flooding is expected.
In addition, when weather warnings are issued, people should contact their council for sandbags to help shore up their home or business.
John Kenny, chief claims manager at NFU Mutual, advised: "It is prudent to review your sums insured regularly by working out room by room how much it would cost to replace your home's contents."
Earlier this month, the Association of British Insurers reached an agreement with the government which aims to ensure that homes and businesses in flood-prone areas can still receive protection.
InsureandGo offers both home and
commercial insurance to protect property and its contents.
