Ryanair urged the Association of British Insurers on Monday to recommend the introduction of travel insurance policies based on airline performance.

The comments from the cheap flights airline came in the wake of figures that showed a surge in the number of bags being misplaced or lost by British Airways.

"Why should consumers choosing Ryanair pay the same for travel insurance as those who fly with British Airways when British Airways loses 70 times more bags?" said the airline in a press release.

According to the company, its own record of safely delivering baggage on time is significantly better than BA's, as Ryanair made sure to improve its performance in the past year, contrary to the general trend.

Spokesman Peter Sherrard used the car insurance industry as an example, which has often provided discounts for low risk categories, such as drivers over their thirties.

"Ryanair calls on the insurance industry to take a new look at travel insurance. The statistics prove that airlines are far from equal, yet insurers do not differentiate," Mr Sherrard added.
