Customers who fly on budget airlines such as Ryanair shouldn’t expect luxury as you "basically pay for what you get", it has been claimed.

James Freemantle, the industry affairs manager for the Air Transport Users Council, said that Ryanair did not have as good customer service as some other airlines but that it was understandable.

He went on to say that the success of the airline proved people were willing to sacrifice comfort for cheaper fares and that, in general, flight providers like Ryanair and easyJet were more low cost than other firms.

Mr Freemantle pointed out that flights operated by Ryanair were "usually pretty punctual" and suggested that recently announced plans to allow passengers to use mobile phones onboard its planes could make the company more popular as it may be important to some travellers.

A survey from TripAdvisor showed that 30 per cent of British travellers said Ryanair was their least favourite airline, the third year in a row that the firm has scooped the accolade.

Recent turbulence in the travel sector means it is more important than ever to get the right travel insurancebefore you go away.
