Budget airline Ryanair is to remove its check-in desks at airports in order to reduce its overheads, although holidaymakers may wish to take out
holiday insurance to ensure they are covered should a booking go wrong.
The airline has is to move its check-in service entirely online.
Savings resulting from the operation will be passed on to passengers in the form of lower air fares.
Michael O'Leary, chief executive of the Irish airline, told Telegraph Travel that all check-in desks and staff will have been removed by the end of 2009.
"All we will have is a bag drop where passengers can drop off their luggage, otherwise everything will be done online," he explained.
And Stephen McNamara, spokesman for Ryanair, said that 97 per cent of passengers already booked online and 75 per cent currently used the web to check in.
He claimed that the plans were now the next logical step.
