Budget Irish carrier Ryanair has been urged to keep its new 1 SMS itinerary charges optional.
While
travel insurance costs can form part of the overall price of a travel, James Fremantle, industry affairs manager for the Air Transport Users Council, has said that SMS itinerary service costs should not be forced on to passengers.
"If passengers can still get confirmation of their flight by email, which is free, then there is no problem with charging 1 per text," he noted.
Mr Fremantle noted that problems only arise when the free email service is withdrawn and the only way to receive confirmation of a booking is to pay for it.
The airline argued that this SMS service will help individuals organise their travels more easily, as there will no longer be a need to print out confirmation as a full itinerary of the service can be sent to a person's mobile phone within 24 hours of their booking.
