The average UK resident will spend more than £500,000 pounds on items bought during Saturday spending sprees, the Co-operative Bank suggests.

According to the group, more than £9,000 is spent every year on Saturday purchases, totalling £549,000 over the course of the average consumer's lifetime.

New clothes and shoes proved the most popular items, with people reported to spend £47 on average on apparel and footwear at the end of the working week.

Overall purchases during the course of the day were said to total £174.56, with eating out, entertainment and electronic goods all popular areas of expenditure.

Maxine Xodo, product manager for The Co-operative Bank credit cards, commented: "As a nation we work some of the longest hours in Europe and many people live for the weekend, with Saturday being the one-day where people feel they can let their hair down."

Late last month, the bank urged consumers to consider their spending habits ahead of the early May bank holiday, with many parents forking out substantial sums to keep their kids entertained during school breaks.
