Swimmers are finally taking more care over where they choose to bathe in the sea as new research reveals that shark attacks on humans are falling worldwide.

Just four people were killed last year by the mammals and there were 62 attacks worldwide. This is down considerably on 2000, when 11 people died after 79 attacks.

As such, 2006 was another "dull year" for injuries and deaths as a result of shark attacks claims the University of Florida, due to a number of factors including: swimmers being more careful, better medical facilities, better awareness of the dangers and overfishing.

"We love dull years because it means there are fewer serious attacks and fewer victims," said George Burgess, director of the international shark attack file at Florida University's Museum of Natural History.

"It's really quite remarkable when you have only four people a year die in the mouth of a shark and puts in perspective how small shark attack is as a phenomenon."

Florida was found to be the most dangerous location in the world for shark attacks, reporting 23 incidents last year out of the 38 total in the US.

There were seven attacks in Australia, four in South Africa, three in Brazil and two in the Bahamas, while the fatal incidents occurred in Australia, Brazil, La Reunion and Tonga.
