The Scottish tourism industry is hoping to attract a million European visitors to its top destinations with a new marketing scheme.

VisitScotland's campaign has been set up with the aim of encouraging tourists from mainland Europe to visit 16 great destinations in Edinburgh and the Lothians, Precision Marketing reports.

Locations such as Yellowcraif beach in East Lothian, which was recently voted the best beach for a city escape in the UK by Conde Nast, are great for holidays.

"It is great to have so many attractions from our area featured," said Ben Carter, area director of Edinburgh and Lothians for VisitScotland.

"This is an endorsement of the quality of the tourism we have across Edinburgh and Lothians and I have no doubt we will be welcoming many European visitors as a result of this campaign."

The campaign is targeting those in France, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain.
