The largest convergence of Scotland's ancient clans in some two centuries is being planned.
Scheduled to take place in 2009, organisers of the event called 'the Gathering' have stated that not since Sir Walter Scott's Royal Pageant in 1822 have such a large number of clans come together.
Events set to take place at The Gathering will include international pipe band performances, highland games and opportunities for visitors to research family histories.
Lord Sempill, vice-convener of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, said: "Our clan tradition and cultural identity are very closely linked and, at a time when Scots are coming to terms with their identity, The Gathering is a fantastic opportunity to reinforce a very important part of our heritage.
The 1822 Royal Pageant signified the first time a reigning English monarch, George IV, had visited Scotland in almost 200 years.
