While the recent sunny spell may have put a smile on many homeowners' faces, an opportunistic thief entering through an open window could easily wipe it off again.

Greater Manchester Police are working hard in Trafford to make sure that does not happen, urging households not to let the summery sunshine distract them from safety and security.

Inspector Chris Downey of Trafford's Volume Crime Team says: "I cannot stress how important it is that residents secure their doors and windows, especially during the summer months."

Thefts that occur due to windows being left open could also invalidate home insurance policies, as the homeowner is typically subject to a duty of care to ensure that it is not easy for burglars to break in.

Inspector Downey adds that anyone heading away on an extended holiday should consider fitting timers to lights and having a neighbour open their curtains to prevent the property from looking empty.
