Poor perceptions of security checks and immigration controls are discouraging tourists from visiting the US, according to property investment website Escapes2.

But the real estate experts also added that the US government is planning to take steps to remedy this situation and improve the immigration experience of visitors to the country.

In July of this year, the Discover America Partnership estimated that the decline in tourism since September 11 had cost the Florida economy £25 billion.

And the group also said that international arrivals to the US had fallen by 17 per cent in the period between 2000 and 2006.

Figures such as these have driven recent campaigns in US cities such as New York and Las Vegas attempting to attract new visitors, the former using celebrity actors born in the city such as Robert De Niro.

"The US government is aware that tourism numbers have dropped this year [in terms of] visitors from the UK. They're aware that there is a problem, and they are, apparently, going to try to start putting a friendlier face for visitors to the States," said Adrian McDermott, managing director of Escapes2.

One idea being floated was a meet and greet service for new arrivals at the airport, before visitors have to go through immigration.
