An MP's warning about the possibility of Durham Tee's Valley airport as a terror target will be investigated by the Ministry of Defence, local newspaper the Northern Echo has reported.

Ashok Kumar, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, argued that the increased use of the airport to fly soldiers from Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire to Iraq and Afghanistan had made it a likely target for terror attacks.

Mr Kumar brought the matter up during a Commons debate in which he urged Britain's transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick to consider the possibility of added security in light of the recent attacks in Glasgow.

"Although it is primarily a civil airport, the security issues that I wish to raise stem from its use by the military.

"It is the nearest civilian airport to the large army camp at Catterick, about 15 miles away."

He also added that the proximity of RAF Leeming and RAF Church Fenton airfields increased its likelihood of being a target.

Durham Tees Valley airport has grown into a major destination point for the northern part of the country, carrying more than one million passengers last year.

Security measures at another northern airport, Newcastle, were also stepped up due to the recent Glasgow attack.
