Homeowners in Scotland and Northern Ireland should make sure that their insurance policies are up to date and take necessary preventative action this New Year as severe weather is predicted for the weekend.
In these worst affected northerly regions of the UK, the Met Office predicts winds of 80 mph, while Wales and parts of England are also in for a torrid time as 2006 draws to a close with gusts reaching up to 60 mph in weather described as "very squally".
The country's National Weather Service said in a statement: "There is concern for New Year's Eve, particularly over Northern Ireland and Scotland with further very strong winds forecast.
"The advice is to keep up-to-date with the weather forecast and travel information."
Strong winds can also signify extreme changes in weather, often at unexpected times, and so motorists should prepare for heavy rains that are likely to cause driving conditions to deteriorate.
Likewise, homeowners should take precautionary measures, especially in areas at risk from flooding.
