A Fijian shark-diving facility has been awarded an international ecotourism award, it has been announced.

Skal International states that Aqua-Trek has been named winner of its Ecotourism Award for Tour Operators Worldwide.

Up to eight species of shark, including bull and tiger, can be viewed by visitors to the facility, located in Beqa Passage near Pacific Harbour in Viti Levu.

Aqua-Trek has worked with the Fijian government and the local community to create a number of conservation areas to protect the animals.

"This successful initiative to preserve the Fiji shark population through sustainable tourism practices demonstrates best practice in collaboration between local communities and an international dive operator in the conservation of a threatened marine species," the World Travel Tourism Council said.

Fiji is also renowned for its sandy beaches and surf.
