Holidaymakers travelling from Newcastle Airport to Egypt were left disappointed over the weekend as a number of mishaps led to the flight being cancelled, according to local media reports.

First of all, a technical fault with the Flyjet aircraft had to be corrected and then a discrepancy between the number of passengers and the number of people checked in caused a security scare, the Journal reports.

The Flyjet flight had been due to take off at noon on Sunday, bound for popular holiday destination Sharm-El-Sheikh. However, the security scare and technical faults were followed by one of the passengers having to be taken to hospital after suffering from stomach pains.

The flight was eventually cancelled at 19:50 and all of the passengers were put up at the Jury's Inn hotel in Newcastle in order to catch the 10:00 replacement flight the next morning.

A spokeswoman for Newcastle Airport told the newspaper: "The reason the passengers were kept on the plane for so long was because the crew hoped they could resolve the discrepancy in numbers.

"Every single item of luggage was identified by a passenger during the check and it is possible the discrepancy was caused by a miscount."
