New figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have revealed that half of travellers going abroad for a short stay don't take out travel insurance.

And not only are 50 per cent of short-stay travellers not insured, more than ten per cent of those going for long-term holidays never take out insurance either, according to the FCO.

The FCO warned of the risks, as accidents or illnesses can still take place on a short break.

James Caldwell, director of independent finance online for Fair Investment Company, said the new report from the FCO was "alarming", arguing that not being properly covered could cost a traveller thousands of pounds.

Quoting figures from FirstAssist, an Air Ambulance from popular destination the Canary Islands can cost up to £16,000, and almost twice that from the East Coast of the USA, said Fair Investment.
