Britons planning on taking mini breaks over the spring bank holiday should still remember it is vital that they have appropriate levels of
travel insurance, according to finance experts.
Consumer finance portal Find.co.uk warned that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) should not be seen as a replacement for full cover.
Many British holidaymakers carry the EHIC while abroad. The card was introduced in January 2006 and entitles EU residents to emergency medical treatment in the case of accident or illness.
However, the EHIC only matches the standard cover which is provided to citizens of the country you are in and this may not be the equivalent of NHS treatment.
"Travel policies vary dramatically, so it is essential that you buy appropriate insurance which matches the value of your belongings, the cost of your holiday and the type of activity you will be engaging in," said Kate Marsden, marketing director at Find.co.uk.
"Above all, remember that cheapest is rarely best."
