A new record is being celebrated in Singapore this week after it was announced that the city had welcomed its ten millionth visitor for the year.

A surprise welcome was set up for 36-year old Sanjeev Bhandari by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), tradearabibe.com reports.

In 2004, Singapore was attracting eight million visitors each year, but the hard work of the tourist sector in the city has paid off with a 25 per cent increase in the number of tourists attracted.

STB's deputy chief executive, Quek Swee Kuan, noted: "This year has seen record high visitor arrivals for each month, compared to the same month in previous years. In July, we also had the highest ever visitor arrivals recorded in a single month with 951,000 visitors."

Visitors to the city in the coming days will be able to take part in the vibrant New Year's Eve celebrations which feature laser lighting displays and fireworks among other attractions.
