Tiredness can lead to a substantial drop in a motorist's ability to react quickly and think in a straightforward manner, a recent study has suggested.
Research carried out for
car insurance provider LV= by the Mind Lab indicated that a range of participants displayed slower reaction times and poorer concentration when deprived of sleep for a night.
Dr David Lewis, neuropsychologist from the Mind Lab, commented that darker evenings result in an increase in the amount of melatonin produced by the brain, which increases fatigue.
"Fatigue leads to a reduction in abilities including increasing forgetfulness, reduced concentration, slowed reaction times and loss of energy," he explained.
Car insurance provider Direct Line recently stated that it did not believe the hard shoulder should become a default additional lane to reduce motorway congestion, despite a successful pilot scheme on the M42.
