Heavy snow has caused major disruption on the country's roads today as the public was advised not to travel if at all possible.

Many areas across England and Wales were hit by between 10 and 15cm of snow when they woke up this morning and it did not take long before traffic began to pile up on the roads.

A number of accidents have been reported but at present (12:00 GMT) there have been no major problems, although some lane closures are in force and cars are moving much slower than usual due to the adverse conditions.

The Highways Agency issued the following advice this morning: "Anyone looking to travel should check local travel and weather conditions before setting out and be prepared to allow extra time for their journeys.

"They should also take extra care on the roads especially around gritters and snow ploughs which will continue in their vital operation to keep traffic moving."

The organisation added that motorists should not travel "unless your journey is essential".

BBC weather forecasters predict that snow will continue in some parts of the country until nightfall, but as the weather front moves north this snow is likely to turn to sleet.

Freezing fog and black ice could become a problem for road users later in the evening, especially as the night draws in.
