Spain is the leading destination for British travellers looking for solace from bereavement, new research has shown.
According to Expedia, three quarters of British people have gone on holiday to either celebrate a special occasion or forget a traumatic event in their lives.
At 37 per cent, about half of that group said they had taken a break abroad in order to forget difficult times, such as divorce or bereavement.
Spain was one of the most popular destinations among travellers looking to get away from it all, with the young looking to Ibiza in particular.
British students graduating from university are most likely to travel to the US, while recently engaged couples opt for the romance of Paris.
Parents taking their children on holiday opt for Spain most of the time, with six out of the top ten destinations being from this country.
Of those polled, 34 per cent said they were willing to spend £1,000 or more for a foreign holiday on a special occasion, whereas nine per cent would spend over £2,000.
