Speeding drivers will find it harder to evade prosecution with the introduction of new forward facing speed cameras.

Many thousands of motorists attempt to avoid a speeding conviction and possible driving ban by 'passing on' their penalty points to another driver.

It has been notoriously difficult for the police to prove the truth in such cases, but new forward facing speed cameras which provide photographic identification are to be trialled on two sites across London.

Forward facing cameras will soon be in place on Lower Thames Street and, if they prove successful, could be rolled out across the capital.

Jenny Jones, the Mayor of London's road safety ambassador, said: "These additional cameras are aimed at the minority of drivers on London's roads who think they can break the law and get away with it.

"We are determined to close the legal loopholes, catch the rogue drivers who put others at risk and have a consistent approach to traffic law enforcement in London."

Aside from the £60 fine and penalty points, drivers caught speeding can effectively find themselves paying twice, as many insurance providers increase premiums following a conviction.
