Law-breaking drivers are being given a choice between punishment and education, it has been reported.

This month, drivers who are caught by police can opt to receive three penalty points on their licence along with a £60 fine, or undertake a driver safety course as part of a scheme being run by Buckinghamshire county council and staff from the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership.

Being run alongside the Think! Rural Speed Campaign, the scheme illustrates to drivers that as well as speeding, driving too fast for conditions on rural roads can be life-threatening.

Cabinet minister for transportation Valerie Letheren commented: "We shall continue to raise awareness of road safety by talking to motorists."

She added that by carrying out such roadside inspections, the authorities hope to make a difference to the way people think before they get in their car each day.

Drivers with penalty points on their licence may face higher car insurance premium renewals.
