St Helens has been ranked the most car friendly place in the North West and 14 over all, website 24dash.com has reported.

The ranking was given by a new survey from Virgin Money, which used criteria such as petrol prices, congestion levels, abundance and cost of car parking spaces, number of speed cameras and prevalence of car crime.

The report ranked only the 64 top cities and towns in the UK.

Councillor Neil Taylor told 24dash.com that St Helens' position between Liverpool and Manchester also made it an ideal business base and growing destination for visitors.

But Wales' Cardiff did not get such good news, coming bottom of the table's rankings.

Cardiff received very poor marks for parking, which often leads to problems with traffic and congestion.

Local newspaper the South Wales Echo called for better policing of the city's roads to ensure cars are not parked illegally on yellow lines and alleviate the city's problems with traffic movement.
