It is unclear whether UK businesses support proposals for a second runway at Stansted, according to one climate change awareness group.
A spokesperson from Plane Stupid has said that it should not be assumed that UK firms support BAA's expansion plans for the airport.
The comments come following a recent report published by the airport authority which suggested that 70 per cent of 500 Institute of Directors members would support the project.
Patrick Gillett, a spokesperson for Plane Stupid, said: "Businesses want good business provision in terms of flights and the best way to do that is to manage demand rather than endlessly build in accommodation of the growth."
Furthermore he added, consumers should be encouraged to opt for travel by other means for short-haul journeys and to look for holiday destinations closer to home in an effort to reduce the effect of air travel on the environment.
