Australia Zoo, founded by the late Steve Irwin in 1992, has won a top Australian tourism award.

The facility which is now run by Mr Irwin's widow Terri was identified as the top sightseeing attraction in Queensland in the state's 2007 tourism awards.

Queensland tourism minister Desley Boyle described the park as "iconic" and noted that it is forward-thinking with an ever-increasing range of attractions.

"I warmly congratulate Terri Irwin and her team. It's a popular winner and an inspiration to everyone in the industry," Ms Boyle added.

Over 200 entries were submitted in this year's competition.

Mr Irwin died in September 2006 after a stingray barb pierced his heart while he was shooting footage for a television programme off the north coast of Australia.

Before jetting off to visit tourism attractions of any kind, consumers may find it beneficial to invest in comprehensive travel insurance, a competitive deal on which can be obtained from InsureandGo.
