Taking out
travel insurance to cover emergency medical needs is a sensible idea for travellers, but they could also wish to act responsibly regarding their health while on holiday.
Rebecca Freeman, of the British Association of Dermatologists, said that an increase in the number of cases of skin cancer in recent years could be attributed to the number of people heading off on holiday in search of the sun and a glowing tan.
She commented: "Undoubtedly skin cancer cases are on the rise and there are several possible causes. The increase in affordable holidays in sunny destinations may play a role, as may the fashion amongst young people to have bronzed skin."
Those who remembered to pack their travel insurance documents could also find that taking plenty of sun lotion away with them could be a benefit, as excessive tanning could lead to permanent skin damage and an increased risk of developing skin cancer.
According to chief meteorologist at the Met Office Ewen McCallum, the UK looks set to enjoy a scorcher of a summer following two disappointing years in 2007 and 2008.
