Homeowners across Preston have been warned by police to make their homes safe from burglary after a surge in thefts, as reported by local newspaper the Lancashire evening post.
Nine homes were broken into in the past week in the areas of Plungington and Ashton, as thieves made off with thousands of pounds worth in property and cash.
Burglaries have been increasing overall in the Preston areas of Larches, Savick, Ashton Plungington Ingol, Tanterton, Cottam and Riversway, according to the information given by police to the newspaper.
Throughout April and May of this year there were 58 burglaries, in comparison to 28 during the same period of 2006, more than double in one year.
Burglars have been able to walk in unimpeded, due to unlocked doors and open windows, leading to warnings by the local police.
Residents have been advised to keep their homes locked at all times as word could spread of the ease in which thieves have been able to access homes in the area.
So far only one man in his 20s has been arrested, and is currently being questioned.
