People who are considering travelling to sustainable holiday destinations should also look to get there by sustainable modes of transport, it has been suggested.
According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), while the rise in popularity of sustainable holiday destinations is a welcome change, travel habits need to be addressed as well.
Peter Lockley, head of transport policy at WWF, said: "[Travellers] should consider both the impact of how they travel there and the impact of what they do when they get there."
He continued by suggesting that for UK travellers, taking holidays closer to home will help reduce emissions caused by the aviation industry, while for foreign tourists visiting the UK, travelling by rail is the more sustainable mode of transport.
Mr Lockley's comments follow the recent launch of Visit Britain's Green Start pilot programme, which offers travellers advice on how to improve their green credentials when taking holidays.
