British motorists get up close and personal with their vehicles, according to a recent study.

The research by Which Car? suggests that more than 25 per cent of drivers touch and kiss their automobile.

Over a third of road users admit to naming their car, with those living in Northern Ireland the most likely to do so.

Some 60 per cent state that they talk to their vehicle.

Research psychologist at London Metropolitan University Christina Gaitanou comments: "It is not unusual to talk to objects, especially those that have been named. The act of talking to a car reflects that a relationship exists between a person and their car.

"This behaviour shows how people can become attached to objects that they possess," she concludes.

Meanwhile, research by car insurance provider esure suggests that Britons honk their car horns 30 billion times per year.

Road users shopping around for a deal on car insurance may find that contacting InsureandGo, either online or over the phone, allows them to obtain a competitively-priced policy.
