The Tourism Bureau of Taiwan is looking to diversify its appeal to tourists, and has targeted sports tourism as one area of growth.
The growth of competitive sports with international participation in the island has led to the start of a burgeoning sports tourism market.
These include annual competitions such as the Tour de Taiwan Bycicle Race, the Taipei International Marathon, the Yilan International Collegiate Invitational Regatta, the Jones Cup Basketball Tournament and the Asia Cup Penghu Wind Surfing competition.
Now the Taiwanese government has taken notice of the trend and is looking to promote sports more idiosyncratic to the island, such as white-water rafting on the Siouguluan River and dragon-boat races during the Dragon Boat festival.
Taiwan is a small island off the coast of China 245 miles in length and 89 miles wide, but boasts of a diverse ecosystem, being heavily mountainous in the east and featuring gently sloping plains in its western areas.
The island also features both tropical and sub-tropical vegetation.
