Responding to a letter from one of his readers, the Times travel advice expert Richard Green has suggested that for those travelling to India, it is a good idea to take two different guidebooks.

He added that there is a wealth of literature about the subcontinent available, so Mr Green advises to be selective on which two they take.

"It so often happens that you'll find one has more info on one place and then your back up covers something else in better detail," he suggested.

He added that there are also guidebooks focused on distinct regions in India that will be useful for those who are only visiting one area and are concerned about travelling light.

Concluding, Mr Green asserts that while most travel websites on India are bland and uninformative, the Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree Forum is a notable exception.

The Lonely Planet website asserts that it allows visitors to get help and assistance on tourist destinations the world over.
