Children have caused £122 million in damage to the homes of their parents during 2007, according to new research by Halifax Home Insurance.

The firm notes that floors and carpets are the most frequent victims of chaotic kids, with 68 per cent of parents noting that items such as food, paint and juice are commonly spilled on their flooring.

Damage to walls came in second place with 65 per cent of mums and dads reporting graffiti to their wallpaper and paintwork by budding Picassos.

Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at the firm, comments: "Parents can protect themselves from the costs of home repairs and damaged contents by ensuring their home insurance includes accidental damage cover."

Meanwhile, research by Direct Line earlier this year suggested that one in ten parents claim that their children's presence has reduced the value of their home.
