Brits have been urged to forget the image of Tenerife they may hold as it could be outdated by up to 20 years, with the island now providing luxury holidays, it has been claimed.
Javier Blanco from Tenerife Tourism said the destination has changed beyond recognition from its early days of popularity in the 1980s and 90s, where it was seen as a cut-price place to get away from it all, and now offers a range of luxury attractions, including five-star hotels, golf courses and other amenities.
He commented: "Tenerife offers everything from golf destinations, to a huge variety of different hotels in exclusive locations, five-star hotels and small luxury country hotels."
According to statistics published by Tenerife Tourism, total visitor numbers to Tenerife from January to September 2009 were in excess of 3.5 million people
Furthermore, 30 per cent of these travellers were British, with almost 80 per cent of these holidaymakers having visited the island before.
