Those people travelling from Heathrow's Terminal 5 building should check the terms of their
travel insurance, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the ABI, told BBC Radio 4's World at One programme that if people have taken out a policy since the baggage-handling problems became apparent, they should check that they are covered for compensation of lost luggage.
He also explained that under the Montreal Convention, people are entitled to claim reimbursement for lost baggage direct from the carrier regardless of whether they have taken out additional cover.
"People should be checking with their insurer because many insurers are likely to continue with cover even though travel insurance is designed primarily to cover against events which are unforeseen and unexpected," Mr Tarling suggested.
The BBC has reported that some insurance providers are reducing the levels of cover available for tourists travelling from the Terminal 5 building.
