Tests have begun at Heathrow airport's new Terminal five, which is due to be opened in exactly six months.

The facility is set to open on the March 27, and Heathrow operator BAA is thoroughly checking the terminal to make sure it is ready by that date.

As part of the testing process, BAA invited 15,000 passengers to assess the terminal, from car parking spaces to the luggage handling system, as well as the recently installed security system.

'Terminal 5 will redefine the passenger experience at Heathrow, in terms of customer service and improved facilities,' said BAA chief executive Stephen Nelson on the impending opening.

'It is an enormous step forward in the transformation of the airport and will significantly reduce the congestion around the existing infrastructure.'

The new terminal will be able to handle 30 million passengers, which is expected to alleviate the problems of congestion in other parts of the airport.
