Thousands of tourists flocked to the small Thai city of Surin over the weekend to witness the country's 47th annual Elephant Roundup.

Hundreds of actors and pachyderms took part in a re-enactment of centuries-old wartime tactics which celebrate elephants as both a companion of local tribal groups and as patriotic and noble creatures.

A week in length, the festival concludes with the Roundup, where some 300 elephants perform tricks, take part in ceremonies and engage in other games, according to the International Herald Tribune.

The tourism authority of Thailand reports that the Elephant Roundup has become one of the region's most popular tourism attractions.

Upcoming events in the country include the Bangkok Marathon, the Laguna Phuket Triathlon and Kemphaeng Phet Food Festival.
