The government of Thailand has released a warning to travellers to avoid all but essential travel to the southern provinces of the country.

The provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla should be avoided for those travelling to or through these regions.

According to the Thai government, there continues to be 'frequent attacks' in the areas, including shootings and bombings, as a result of the civil unrest that has affected the country.

On May 22nd of this year a British national was hurt in a bomb blast in the province of Yala.

A series of bomb explosions also recently occurred in Bangkok on December 31st of last year, killing six foreigners.

The Thai government has warned that the threat of terrorism continues and has had to increase security in Bangkok, particularly in public places.

Martial law, which began on September of last year, has been lifter in 41 of Thailand's 76 provinces, but visitors to the country have also been warned to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations for the time being.

Of the consular cases dealt by the UK embassy in Thailand last year, 220 were due to hospitalisation.

The country received 850,000 British visitors in 2006.
