A plane carrying tourists to a popular resort island crashed in Thailand on Sunday, killing at least 88 of its passengers.

The MD-82 plane skidded off the runway and crashed due to bad weather as it was trying to land at Phuket island, breaking in two.

But some passengers were able to escape even as the plane was engulfed in flames, by jumping out the windows.

Flight OG269 from budget airline One-Two-Go airlines was carrying 123 passengers and seven crew from Bangkok to the resort island of Phuket.

The majority of passengers, for a total of 78, were foreigners, including some Britons, according to airport authorities.

And of the 43 injured that were rescued, eight were Britons and were currently being treated at a local Thai hospital.

The weather was seen as the leading factor as to why the plane had crashed, with heavy rains and winds, as well as poor visibility, hampering the pilots' attempts to land safely.

One-Two-Go airlines began operating only three years ago, when Thailand's airline industry was liberalised.
