A new study has found that fewer people in the UK are taking two-week vacations than ever before.

The Travel Inn study suggests that British residents are struggling to find the money and time to take extended time away and are instead opting for shorter holidays.

Nearly a quarter of those included in the study couldn't afford to take breaks that lasted longer than a few days, with 24 per cent also reporting that family vacations during school holiday periods were too expensive to be a realistic option.

Chris Hale, spokesman for Holiday Inn, said that nowadays more people are choosing short UK breaks to take advantage of cheaper deals.

"Gone are the bad old days when people would save all year for their annual two-week summer holiday at the busiest and most expensive period - we're much too savvy nowadays," he adds.

The news follows a recent statement from tourism body Visit Britain announcing that the UK is often overlooked as a travel destination.
