Drivers without
car insurance will not escape unpunished under a new government clampdown, it has been claimed.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at the British Insurance Brokers Association, said his organisation had met transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick to discuss the new measures.
These included comparing databases of registered car owners and cover policies to help catch insurance dodgers.
Mr Trudgill said: "Basically you're not going to get away with driving uninsured anymore."
A consultation document will now go out on how the scheme is expected to work, with the measure likely to come into effect in about two years.
According to Mr Trudgill, "everybody wins basically apart from the villains who have to comply".
Statistics released this week by the Motor Insurance Bureau found that there are around two million uninsured vehicles on British roads, mainly in major cities and towns.
Last year, police seized more than 150,000 uninsured motors and crushed or disposed of 40 per cent of them.
