Consumer watchdog Which? has advised travellers to be wary of undergoing medical procedures outside of the UK.

The advice follows a survey of people who had travelled abroad for surgery which found that while 57 per cent were very happy with the results, 18 per cent of people had run into difficulties.

Eight per cent of respondents stated that they had to turn to the NHS to rectify mistakes made during the process, while more than a quarter feel that they did not receive adequate care.

Following the findings, Which? advises people to research medical practices and procedures thoroughly before committing to an operation.

"People need to be clear about what their contract says in the event of a complication and remember that legal rights differ across countries," the organisation notes.

Advice site Treatmentabroad.net notes that the number of people choosing to undergo medical procedures outside of the UK has risen sharply as people look to reduce the costs of treatment.
