Three quarters not covered by pet insurance, survey says

New figures published by Fair Investment show nearly three-quarters of people do not have any pet insurancein place, which the company warns could leave pet owners in danger of unexpected bills to treat injured pets.

According to the RSPCA, fireworks are the biggest cause of distress to animals on November 5th, with nearly half of dogs in the UK showing signs of fearful behaviour when they hear the noise of fireworks.

Rachael Stiles, a spokeswoman for Fair Investment, warned that fireworks can cause animals "extreme anxiety" and that this could lead to conditions such as depression and fatigue.

She went on to point out that most pet insurance polices will offer "some degree" of cover for the cost of vets' fees and treatment for the symptoms of pets scared by fireworks.

If people are worried about their pets this Guy Fawkes Night, a few simple tips could keep their pet calm. Keeping animals indoors is advisable, as if providing some background noise such as the television or radio.

The Times recently reported that one in two pets needs the care of a vet every year, citing figures from the Pet Health Council.
