Scottish residents change the largest amounts of holiday money before they leave the country, it has been claimed.

According to M&S Money, those living north of the border converted an average of £340 before jetting off, compared with £295 changed up by residents in Northern Ireland.

The group explained that by swapping money ahead of time, tourists can avoid transaction, commission and conversion fees and help keep spending under control.

Fraser Millar, head of travel services at M&S, said: "Leaving it until you get to the airport to buy travel money can cost you more as you may be charged commission and exchange rates tend to be uncompetitive."

She added that withdrawing money overseas can also expose people to hefty handling charges.

In August, the group reported that sales of Turkish Lira had increased 53 per cent year-on-year, making it the second most popular "exotic" currency, behind the Australian dollar.
