Using satellite navigation technology to get around helps to make driving less stressful and also heightens awareness, TomTom has claimed.

Commenting recently, Jenny Hodge, public relations manager for TomTom in the UK and Republic of Ireland, pointed to research that showed that sat nav may also help to improve general driving behaviour.

"In addition, use of a sat nav reduces the number of miles driven and the time spent travelling, which in turn has a positive effect on the environment and fuel costs," she explained.

Further research from the group indicated that nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) of people said they felt more in control of their journey when they were using sat nav technology.

More than half (55 per cent) of those questioned said they felt more alert while they used the devices, while 77 per cent said they used the devices to reduce stress levels while behind the wheel.
