Pousada means "resting place" and is the term given to a range of historic hotels across Portugal, many of which used to be castles, palaces and fortresses.

The Times has identified what it deems to be the best six such forms of accommodation for those planning a visit to the region.

Included in the top half-dozen is Pousada Da Rainha Santa Isabel in Estremoz, which is located in a 14th-century castle and features pink and white marble quarried locally, antiques and views over the surrounding area.

Pousada De Nossa Senhoa Da Oliveira in the northern town of Guimaraes is another facility recommended by the publication, with ten en suite rooms and furnishings which "maximise comfort".

Established attractions in Portugal include Peneda-Geres National Park, Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and Nation's Park.
